Course description / timetable

This 2-day course is targeted at consultant surgeons and aims to enable participants to improve their intraoperative performance by understanding human factor issues in the operating theatre. This includes the role of non-technical skills and the causes and effects of surgical error.

Outline - course content:

Characterising error; identifying threats in the operating theatre; strategies for pre-emption; handling the effects of error on staff; non-technical skills (cognitive and interpersonal); fatigue and stress management; developing the safety culture.

Mode of delivery: Keynote lectures, interactive video simulation and small group discussion.

Why should I go on the SOS Course?

This course is constructed to enhance surgeons’ sensitivity to, understanding of, and resistance against errors in the theatre environment. It will highlight the mechanisms which can expose blind spots in safe practice and assist in engendering skills and behaviours which contribute towards better team working , stronger leadership roles and optimal communication.
