The purpose of this guide is to provide an introduction to the concept of human factors in healthcare and provide suggestions of how its elements can be applied by individuals and teams working to improve patient safety. It aims to build awareness of the importance of human factors in making changes to improve patient safety.

This report was prepared for WHO Patient Safety’s Methods and Measuresfor Patient Safety Working Group. It provides a basic description of major topic areas relating to human factorsrelevant to patient safety, with some indication of possible tools that can beused in a healthcare workplace for measurement or training of these topics.

A video series has been commissioned by the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) containing experts from a variety of backgrounds and some of the world leaders in patient safety giving you an account of where hospital systems and individuals may be vulnerable.
